5 ways to slash your apartment water bill by 25%

Water shortage is already a prevalent problem in many metropolitan cities and it is very much apparent in our garden city of Bengaluru. This situation is now  a global phenomenon with Cape Town becoming the first city to completely run out of consumable water. Our neighboring state had similar issue in the city of Chennai recently, where water supply was down to 20% of its usual capacity. Water as a resource has become amongst the most if not the most valuable resource in the world and we should be vary of the problems it will create for us and our children.
Our ethos at ECARMA has always been - "Prevention is better than cure" and every apartment we serve, we have tried to implement prevention measures for water conservation. Here are our 5 key recommendations for you to save, conserve and reduce water consumption in your apartment by at least 20%
Central water meter for Main Tanks - This meter helps in tracking the supply of water at the source and in apartments where water is supplied through tankers helps prevent cheating by these incumbents. This is a one time cost effective method to make all external parties supplying the water accountable and track the quantity of water used by the apartment in general. You may opt for an Analog meter or a digital meter based on your budget. We have a minimum a 10- 15% reduction of water supply costs at apartments where these water meters have been installed.
Implementation of per house water meter — This is the most effective method of holding each flat in your apartment accountable for the use of water. This setup works exactly like an electricity meter and every month the water bill can be provided as per reading and the rate. The cost for setting up this system is medium to high depending on the pipeline system installed by your builder. This setup has helped reduce the burden of bearing the cost of water usage by a minimum of 25-30% per house due to usage tracking.
Recycling used water using STP - STP implementation helps in recycling dirty water for non human consumption purposes. This water can be used in restrooms, common area cleaning and gardening purposes. This system has helped reduce water bills by a whooping 33% in some of our apartments and is a very effective method in conserving consumable water. BBMP has mandated the implementation of STP for all apartments with more than 50 flats.
Rain water Harvesting - This implementation redirects rainwater to ground water pits to increase your water table level, replenishing your borewell in the process. The cost of implementation ranges from medium to high starting at 1 lac INR depending on reviving an existing setup or implementing a new one. A well maintained RWH system results in a minimum of 20% of savings in water supply costs due to reduced demand in the apartment
Aerator implantation — This is most cost effective way to reduce water consumption at the outlet. This device maybe fitted in kitchen taps and utility where continuous flow of water is needed for washing purposes. Aerators provide more bang for your buck by providing high pressure cleaning at low consumption. This reduces consumption level at per house level to a minimum of 40%.
The benefits of water conservation techniques such as these outweigh the one time costs involved in their implementation. If you have more questions about implementation, please feel free to reach us at contactus@ecarma.in or +91 9663165300
